Intelligent Power Distribution Unit (IPDU) – T1355
Overview
- The T1355 Intelligent Power Distribution Unit with battery voltage sense is designed to be a centralized point to which several devices can be connected. The main focus for such a device is in the mobile workforce sectors such as Utilities and Emergency Services, however, the applications are not limited to this environment and many more uses for the unit could be considered.
- The unit is designed predominantly to distribute power to the IT equipment invariably found in the vehicles of these sectors.
- There is a great need to protect the vehicles battery system from excessive discharge and the resulting inconvenience of not being able to start the engine or the premature failure of a battery due to excessive cycling.
- The unit accepts a 9V to 15V fused feed from the vehicles battery.
A small low powered sense wire input controls the status of two DC output channels. This can be wired to a suitable switch or the vehicles ignition system and is useful to control the power state of the devices connected to them. A third DC output channel is not driven by this sense wire and is permanently live. This is useful to connect critical devices to.
- The main feature of the unit is its ability to sense the input voltage coming into the device. The installer selects a ‘LOW SET’ voltage by the means of a rotary switch and this parameter controls the point at which power is cut to the two switched DC output channels regardless of the state of the sense wire. This voltage is normally set at a point just above the voltage which is known to be required to start the vehicle.
The installer also selects a ‘HIGH SET’ voltage by means of a similar switch and this controls the point at which the power is restored to the two switched DC output channels.
- The reason the voltages are selectable is that all vehicles and their uses differ greatly. Devices which are programmed with preset levels are prone to not being effective in two major ways. The first is that if the cut-off voltage is too low for the vehicle then the user will simply be faced with continuous flat battery issues and the inconvenience and lost productivity which goes with this situation. The second is that if the voltage is set too high then the user is faced with having to run the vehicle for too long a period which wastes fuel and contributes unnecessarily to global environmental pollution. The Tempus unit is easily adjustable across a wide range and can therefore be customized to suit the exact environment it is being used in.
